Ten Weeks

I missed posting last week so now I have some catching up to do (which, truthfully, has become the story of my life).

Devin is ten weeks old now. He had his two month checkup last week and got his first shots. He didn't even cry when they gave him the first one but then the nurse warned me that he'd definitely cry with the second one. She was right. He got four shots altogether and had to take one vaccination orally. I don't remember Dax ever having to drink anything.

It was no surprise to find that he is in the 90th percentile for weight. The pediatrician praised me for keeping up with him. Lucky for him he's the second kid because I find it much easier to nurse this time around and don't mind as much the round-the-clock feedings.

Devin's two biggest accomplishments so far took place this last week: he made a big improvement on sleeping (hitting a record seven and a half hours on Thursday night) and he rolled over from tummy to back for the first time. The rolling over may have been a total fluke because he hasn't done it again. I'm really hoping that is not the case with the sleeping.

Speaking of sleeping, check out this side-by-side comparison of the boys deep in slumber. That's Dax on the left at about the same age Devin is now.

8 weeks

Devin is two months old now and changing by the minute. I swear sometimes I put him to bed looking one way and then, when I go to get him out of his cradle, he looks like a different child. While I still see a definite resemblance between the boys, Devin is certainly coming into his own in terms of both his looks and his personality.

Our little one is very laid back, sweet, and soft spoken. He has started making more "noise" but it is usually soft coos and quiet little bursts of vowel sounds. He loves to be held. In fact, I don't think "loves" quite covers it. One of the challenges I'm having is that I feel like he's not getting enough tummy time because he gets upset when there are people in the room who ARE NOT HOLDING HIM.

Today I gave him his last dose of antibiotics and I'm really hoping it did the trick. Poor little guy has a horrible diaper rash because of it. We have a follow up appointment (and his two month checkup and first shots) on Wednesday. Please keep your fingers crossed that he'll get a clean bill of health.

And now from the school of "The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same".......here's a picture of Cat with Dax when he was only a bit more than a week old.

Aaaaand....here he is with Devin just this past week.

7 Weeks

For at least the first year of Dax's life I remember tracking oodles of milestones. First time rolling from front to back, first time rolling from back to front, first time to sit up unassisted, first time to crawl, first time to walk, first word, first tooth....and on and on and on. It is not all that different this time around with the exception that I'm far less nervous about the whole thing. Which is good. Especially considering the milestone Devin just hit.

He has his first cold. Which brought with it his first ear infection. Which resulted in his first dose of antibiotics. In other words? He's very......leaky.

He doesn't seem completely miserable most of the time. Nights are difficult because neither of us are sleeping very well. I mean, nobody sleeps all that well with a seven-week-old baby in the house but it is especially challenging when that baby is congested and unhappy.

We found out when we had to take him in the doctor that he weighs 12 pounds and 12 ounces. His next appointment is, I think, on the 20th when he'll get his first shots and get that ear rechecked.

This week saw a lot more smiles and experimental noise making. He's also had a tiny bit more time on the floor to flail and kick although he definitely prefers to be held. Cat got to give him his first bottle and he took it just fine. Cat also got to spend some time with the kid when he wasn't crying. See, Cat doesn't usually get home until The Witching Hour when Devin is fussing and eating non-stop. If you don't lactate and it is between the hours of about 5PM and around 8PM? My son wants nothing to do with you.

Here's a picture of him pre-illness when I was able to capture an enormous grin with the camera. I took this early in the week and the kid has already changed.

6 Weeks

Ok...so I missed posting for week 5. My mom was visiting but did I take advantage of that time to do anything productive? No. No, I did not. But here's a picture of Devin with his Nanna wearing the adorable sweater that Cat's boss Carol made knitted for him.

And now that I've used a baby picture to distract you all from my laziness let's see what Baby Center has to say about week 6:

"Now that your baby's awake for longer periods during the day, you can use these times to support his sensory development. Try singing your favorite lullabies or playing music.

Your baby may not be able to talk yet, but his face is sure telling you a lot. He's experimenting with different facial expressions — pursing his lips, raising his eyebrows, widening or squinting his eyes, and furrowing his brow."

Yep and yep. Today I took Devin with me to pick up the groceries and he got good and mad while we were waiting because, you know, the car wasn't moving and WOE AND AGONY! To try to calm him down I turned on some music. First I tried some new agey stuff and he wailed louder. So then I tried some classical to no avail. I kept flipping through channels and testing them out until I landed on a Sinatra song (his version of Paper Moon) and suddenly Devin stopped crying. So now I'm very curious about his musical tastes and I will be playing more for him this week to see how he responds.

I've yet to be able to capture a picture of Devin smiling but he has been doing so (and not just because of gas). This is, in my opinion, the best milestone EVER. Well, ok....another fantastic milestone is "sleeping through the night" and I am hoping we are also well on our way to that. Devin has fairly consistently been sleeping in at least one five hour chunk every night and last night he hit six hours. Please cross your fingers that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship with the sandman.
