Triumphant Return

Dax has been sick and we've been trying to keep him "quiet and resting". This translates to = parked in front of the television for long periods of time. And that has resulted in the Triumphant Return of The Wiggles.

The Wiggles had been Dax's favorite form of entertainment for several months when they were slowly and unceremoniously replaced by Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Curious George. But for the past two days he has wanted to watch his Wiggles DVDs. Over and over and over again.

Bad timing, however, as the Curious George movie just arrived from Blockbuster Online and he could not be less interested in that because he is far too busy watching his beloved Wiggles. Good thing Blockbuster has no late fees. This could take awhile.

Day 1

Dax is half passed out on the couch, sucking down a sippy cup of milk, watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and recuperating from his first day at his new school.

I understand the day started out rough. Not surprising, really. If I was just getting over a cold and someone dumped me off in a strange place with a bunch of people I didn't know I might be a bit upset about it myself. Cat called me shortly after dropping Dax off and told me that when he left our son was crying. He then said that nobody was watching the children and it was like "Lord of the Flies" there. After I clawed my eyeballs out but before I dropped dead of a heart attack I realized this was his very sad attempt at making a joke. (Note to my husband: Payback is a bitch.)

Miss Cindi won Dax over by striking up a conversation about his Mickey Mouse t-shirt. I don't know how long he cried. I didn't ask. I don't want to know. I'm still recovering from the Lord of the Lies "joke".

Because it is Valentine's Day, it was not a typical day at school. When I got there to pick Dax up I was told that he might not be feeling very well and I immediately felt horrible because I thought we'd forced him to go to school too soon. Maybe he hadn't had enough time to get over his cold. But no. He had just eaten a ton of candy which he had gotten along with his Valentine's from all his new friends.

Um....pardon? My son? Ate candy? But he doesn't like candy. He never eats candy. "Well," said Cindi, "That might explain the tummy ache."

And the sugar coma he has slipped into.

He was definitely ready to go home but he did say goodbye to everyone and "see you tomorrow". As we walked down the driveway he told me about all the cards and candy he got from his friends. I asked him if he had fun and if he wanted to come back tomorrow and he said that he had and that he did.

I wonder if he'll feel the same way when he gets there tomorrow and realizes that not every day will be filled with colorful cards and more than his body's weight in sugar.

Denial

Usually I deal with change fairly well. Really, I do. But we've recently had to deal with a major change that I am definitely heartbroken over. I haven't written much about this because, quite frankly, I was in denial about it and pretending it wasn't happening. Guess what? That doesn't work.

We've had to switch Dax to a new daycare because Tracy and Dave are moving. (If you live in the Granite Bay/Roseville/Folsom area and you are looking for The Greatest Daycare Of All Time just let me know because that's where they will be.) His last day was on Friday.

Today was supposed to be Dax's first day at his new school but he's come down with a cold. I think he's pulling a sick-out. He's on strike. He's voicing his disappointment with this development. Or not. But, you know, I would if it was me.

We will obviously stay in touch because Tracy and Dave are incredible people in general and we've grown quite fond of them. We'll also stay in touch with Rachel and Eileen, Tracy's assistants, with whom Dax totally fell in love.

The new place will be fine. It will be great. But it just won't be the same.

And just in case any of you were wondering? Yes, I did make it out of there on Friday, his last day, without crying. Yep. I waited until I got out to the car before I cried. Go me!
